Reading through these pages, from the early 11th-century B.C. Chinese bronze ceremonial inscription to the 19th-century Japanese scroll "Branch of Plum in a Vase" to the 14th-century Syrian glass bottle decorated with Arabic thuluth characters, one is increasingly in awe of the grace, beauty, and tradition of the art. Essays and individual entries provide historic background, stylistic analysis, and translation. The layout shows a fine balance between text and plates/details.
