Book Description Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Maps, Line Drawings, Diagrams (illustrator). 1st. Subtitled "A guide and natural history," Robert McDowell's study was a land-mark book on its topic and was welcomed as summarising what had been learned about this faura, including introduced species, over many years by bringing together material published in scientific journals. The author noted in his preface that there was an absence of good books for the identification of NZ fishes. The book opens with a chapter "The study and structures of fishes," followed by 17 chapters relating to the various species/families. The concluding chapter includes NZ Fish and Fisheries, Diseases and Parasites and Zoogeography The author's Epilogue contains a plea for all those involved in the administration of waterways and natural resources to remember that freshwatrer fishes inhabit the lakes and rivers of the countryside and are "part of the unique natural heritage of NZ." Basically a scientific study it is, however, written in a manner that is easily understood by the lay reader, while also of value to recreationsd fishers of lake and river and a reminder to conservationists and environmentalists that the challenges they face today were recognised when the book was published in 1978. Since then it has remained a recognised reference on the topics traversed. First edition from Heinemann, 230 pages including references and index, illustrated throughout with colour/b-w photos , numerous line drawings also diagrams and maps. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+ with hint wear spine base/lower corners, small narrow strip cut from top corner FFEP, text block otherwise NF. Dust jacket with colour photo front a rear is VG+ with few chips. A heavy book at 950grams unpacked -- would require additional postage for international delivery. Seller Inventory # 004968
