This book by an Italian paleontologist contains a splendid array of color photographs of many types of fossils accompanied by a text describing groups of organisms systematically. The book is basically sound, although there are a few misidentifications, some odd phraseologies, and many inconsistencies and minor errors, most probably due to the English translation. Another similar and much less expensive color atlas, V. Turek and others' Fossils of the World (Crown, 1989), has more emphasis on specific organisms. Medium- and large-sized public libraries that have not recently added a new pictorial work on fossils should consider one or both of these works by European specialists.
