From School Library Journal:
Grade 7 Up Young people who want to know about The Perils of Pauline, The Birth of a Nation or The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari will appreciate this new book. Meyer does an excellent (but dry) job of chronicling the events of movie making from 1880 to the 1960s, after which, unfortunately, he only hints at trends and titles. While moving from silent to sound, to color and Cinemascope, the emphasis is on Hollywood. There is also an abundance of information about foreign film making. Some, such as German movie making under the regime of Hitler, will tie in nicely with history books. Anecdotes are included about stars and directors, but there are not enough to make up for the dreary list of movies that fill the pages. This book is too much like a college thesis or textbook to become popular reading for young people. It's a choice primarily for serious movie fans. Judie Porter, Media Services Center, Portsmouth School Department, R.I.
