This might well have been entitled Atlas of American Military History , since military matters predominate. The whole of American history is lucidly condensed into a mere 35 pages of narrative text, which is expanded by map and picture captions. This conciseness will force users to seek elaboration of events in other works. Some of the maps have been used previously, as in Natkiel's Atlas of Maritime History . While the maps themselves are crisply drawn, the multicolor format has not photocopied well, and the arbitrary shading for land or water is confusing. The three-page index is inadequate. The primary use of this volume will be to udate aging historical atlas collections. James Moffet, Baldwin P.L., Birmingham, Mich.
