After spending much of his life in Madisonville, Kentucky, aching to be somewhere more exotic, biologist Conrad decided to take off on "a summer of anarchy." Ostensibly, his purpose was to travel to central Mexico by bus and write a book about the area's natural history. In this travelog of his adventures, he describes the back country of central Mexico while making observations, noting misadventures, and reporting encounters with various bird and rare plant life, as well as imparting discoveries about himself. He is both an observer and intimate participant in the lives of the Mexicans and Indians he meets. While not an essential purchase for most libraries, this is well written and provides insight into the life and culture of our nearest southern neighbor.
