The U·X·L® Experiencing Eras & Events series consists of two- to four-volume works each devoted to a specific era, event or theme that is studied in the middle school or high school curriculum. Each volume includes an overview essay introducing the topic followed by approximately 25 entries, 10-20 pages each, on the fiction, nonfiction, short stories, poetry, drama, music and/or movies associated with the topic. Each genre is discussed in an overview essay. Following each overview are 3-6 entries for each genre covering significant works, focusing on those appropriate for younger students and researchers. Identified by advisors, the topics are those that are most often the subjects of written reports, oral presentations and other research projects. Among the topics to be covered are the American civil rights movement, the Holocaust, the Harlem Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, the Vietnam War and others.

From Booklist:
Discussing 25 original works (novels, nonfiction, short stories, poems, plays, films, and songs), this set serves as an introduction for young adults to the wide range of creative treatments of the Civil War. With the help of an advisory board of school librarians and media specialists, the Hillstroms tried to select works with teen protagonists and to present a balanced view of the war--North and South, white and black, male and female. The selections include classics such as The Red Badge of Courage, "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," and "O Captain! My Captain." Also included are lesser-known works such as William B. Becker's play Brady of Broadway and current titles such as the film Glory and Gary Paulsen's YA novel Soldier's Heart.

The volumes are arranged by genre. Every chapter begins with an overview essay and a list of representative titles (between 8 and 24 annotated items). Between 2 (for plays and films) and 7 (for novels) works are given in-depth treatment. Each entry includes a brief summary of the work being discussed; a biography of the author, composer, etc.; historical background; a summary of plot or subject matter; themes and stylistic characteristics; a few starter research ideas or activities for students; a short annotated list of related titles in various genres; and a list of sources providing additional information. Essays average 15 pages and usually include black-and-white illustrations or photographs. Occasional sidebars provide interesting details, such as the recent controversy over the novel The Wind Done Gone.

At the beginning of the first volume, a time line ranging from 1775 to 2000 refers to events and people discussed in the essays. At the end of each volume is a short list of books and Web sites for middle- and high-school study, as well as an index for the set.

Although one might not agree with all of the Hillstroms' choices, their selections do represent an interesting mix of ideas. Librarians will find this a nice addition to school library and curriculum-oriented public library collections. RBB

From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-9-Within its self-imposed limitation of exploring relatively few works in depth rather than attempting comprehensive coverage, this collection of critical essays will be a boon to many teachers. Volume one covers selected novels and nonfiction, while volume two comments on examples of short stories, poetry, plays, films, and songs. Each section includes an overview of the genre, followed by analyses of two to seven specific selections. Ten- to 20-page essays consider works completed during Civil War times, such as the songs "Dixie" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," as well as recent interpretations of the era, such as Edward Zwick's film Glory and Ossie Davis's play Escape to Freedom. The selections were made with an eye toward young adult preferences and typical school reading lists and include Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage as well as more popular works, such as Ann Rinaldi's In My Father's House. The essays treat each piece's historical background, plot, theme, and characters, and discuss the life of the author, composer, or director in clear and simple prose. Other significant titles are summarized in each section, and abundant photographs, illustrations, and historical sidebars add interest, as do suggestions for activities and guides to additional sources. Although most useful as a supplementary source for classroom study, this reference tool has sufficient visual and textual appeal to arouse browsers' curiosity about the materials discussed.
