This Nixon is one helluva book, beginning with a character-setting interview with Mr. Oliver Stone in which he discusses, among other provocative topics, Anthony Hopkins as Nixon. Next comes a remarkable collection of essays by an eclectic group of contributors, including Stone's coauthors of the Nixon screenplay, Nixon employees such as Alexander Butterfield, John Dean, and Howard Hunt, journalists, politicians, and a few historians. The essays provide the perfect backdrop for the original version of the Nixon screenplay that follows, presented with footnotes for certain events and lines of dialogue and a sizable bibliography of books, articles, CDs, TV/video productions, government documents, and court cases. At times reading the screenplay is like "reading" a newsreel; at other times it is as mesmerizing as perhaps falling under the spell of a cobra. The book concludes with documents and tapes, including the famous "smoking gun" conversation between Haldeman and Nixon. Stone is playing hardball here; the film will certainly have its critics, but they will not be able to fault his facts. And it will stir up its share of controversy, particularly with politicians like Bob Dole playing the Nixon card. Yet, it is undeniable that this book posits a coherent statement about the legacy of the Nixon presidency: because of Nixon's hubris, no succeeding administration can expect the nation to extend to it the trust and confidence extended to administrations in the past; presidents will be fair game for the worst kind of scrutiny, private and public.
