Grade 4-6-Anecdotes make up a large part of the first book, with some basic scientific explanations included. Mostly unpredictable and unavoidable, the deadly effects of El Nino and La Nina, such as tornadoes, fires, floods, etc., wreak havoc in the lives of people and animals throughout the globe. The possible causes of the increase of their severity in the past few decades are not discussed. The Hindenburg Disaster is a thorough, if pedestrian, discussion of the possible causes of the tragedy (including the possibility of a bomb planted by an anti-Nazi passenger). The event still poses some questions today and suggests some political intrigue. Numerous illustrations taken from brochures and advertisements of the period add some interest, as does the description of the luxurious life aboard for travelers. In both books, statements made by victims or scientists are footnoted, but sources for other facts are not cited. These titles provide some information for students doing reports, but are not inviting enough for general reading.
