Introduction One Church's Story

A church had outgrown its building and the congregation was meeting in a temporary location while they earned the money they needed to build a new building. In Sunday school the children learned about how the Israelites worshipped God in the tabernacle--a temporary meeting place--while they were wandering in the desert on their way to the Promised Land. While the adults in the church were offering their pledges toward the new building, the kids made piggy banks and saved their pennies.

One Sunday, the children offered their gifts to God and to the church. They marched into the sanctuary in a long line during the morning worship service, and one by one they dumped the contents of their piggy banks into a large tub at the front of the church. When the adults saw the faithfulness and service of the church's children, many of them tore up their own pledge cards and filled out new ones for larger amounts.

Those children's pennies were put to good use. They paid for a glass wall that separated the sanctuary from the foyer in the new church. The church's five reasons for ministry were inscribed on that wall. As those children grow up, each time they see that wall, they'll remember the role they had in providing it for the congregation. What a powerful active-learning tool!

Writing Your Own Story

This church is the exception. Many churches do an inadequate job of encouraging children, especially preschoolers, to serve. While preschoolers are often considered to be developmentally self-centered, research and practice also show that even very young children can empathize with and care for others in meaningful ways.

The ideas in Service Projects Preschoolers Can Do are designed to help you actively engage preschoolers in serving their families, their local churches, their communities, and the world. While the ideas in this book will make a lasting difference in the lives of others, they also take into consideration the natural limitations of preschoolers. And just as the church linked its service project to the story of the Israelites worshipping in the tabernacle, each activity in this book is tied to a passage of Scripture. Not only will children learn to serve; they'll also learn that the reason we serve others is because God loves everyone and wants us to show his love.

Included in each idea is a teaching time to help children understand a Bible story or biblical truth, and a project time for serving others. You'll also find lists of supplies and preparation necessary for each idea. And check out the Scripture index (p. 107) to find an idea that ties to a specific Bible reference.

Several of the ideas in this book call for plenty of supplies and preparation. We think you'll agree that the service projects in this book are so valuable and important for preschoolers, they're worth the extra effort involved.

With Service Projects Preschoolers Can Do, you're ready to lead preschoolers on fun, educational service adventures. Kids will never forget the meaningful service projects outlined in this book, and neither will the people they serve!
