First activated as the 10th Light Division (Alpine) in 1943 and most recently deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq, the 10th Mountain Division has more than half-a-century’s service as an elite force fighting for its country. 10th Mountain Division takes us through this military combat unit’s history and its most recent missions, personnel, and equipment. Military historian and journalist Fred J. Pushies follows the 10th Mountain Division from its first action in Italy in late 1944 (when Bob Dole served in its ranks) to its return to service training soldiers for the Korean War and work on NATO defense bases throughout Germany; from its reactivation during the Reagan military build-up of the 1980s to its deployment for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm; from its role in disaster relief in Florida after Hurricane Andrew and during the famine in Somalia to its current service in Afghanistan and Iraq. More than any ever written, his book provides a true sense of what it means to be a part of this elite division.

From the Back Cover:

Following other Military Power series titles, 10th Mountain Division focuses on this military combat unit’s missions, personnel, and equipment. Author Fred Pushies gives a comprehensive sense of what it means to be a part of this elite unit, which has been involved in more deployments in the last decade than any other division in the U.S. Army.

10th Mountain Division begins with the division’s early history as a ski unit modeled after the famed Finnish “soldiers on skis” who destroyed two Russian tank divisions in 1939. The 10th Mountain Division was activated as the “10th Light Division (Alpine)” in 1943. It was renamed the “10th Mountain Division” in late 1944 and first saw World War II combat in Italy. Among notable veterans of the division is Bob Dole, who served as second lieutenant in the division during the war. The division was deactivated in November 1945. The unit returned in 1948 through 1958 as the “10th Infantry Division,” during which it trained soldiers for service in Korea and for NATO defense bases throughout Germany.

The modern 10th Mountain Division was officially reactivated during President Ronald Reagan’s military buildup in February 1985 as the “10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry),” and was first deployed under that name for operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The division also took on disaster relief in Florida after Hurricane Andrew and during the famine in Somalia. Following 9/11, the division has been frequently deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Rapid deployment is the hallmark of the 10th Mountain Division. Within ninety-six hours from notification, the division can deploy by air, sea, or land anywhere in the world.

10th Mountain Division includes more than one hundred photos and exciting operational scenarios to tell the unique story of this versatile combat force.
