From Booklist:
Ooh, there’s an adorable baby orangutan on the cover; that’s sure to hook early readers. This level 2 title in the Kingfisher Readers program reveals the mysteries of the rain forest. The real draw here is large, full-color photos of exotic animals (brightly hued poisonous frogs, for example) and lush fauna. Large-print text describes the “hot, rainy place,” and there’s a new chapter on each spread, with its own page heading, ideal for those just starting out. Subjects include plants (“trees are the world’s tallest plants”); an animal’s ability to camouflage; species of the rain forest rivers; village life for those who call the rain forest home; and saving the rain forest. Plenty of repetition reinforces learning, and new vocabulary words, from canopy to sloth, are defined in a glossary. A high-interest nonfiction subject combines with an appealing design in a package that’s sure to capture the interest of, and encourage, emerging readers. Grades K-3. --Ann Kelley
