In the mountains, a trickle of water forms a streamlet that flows past a pine tree. Five little pinecones plop down into the water and begin their journeys. As the stream grows into a river and flows through the varied countryside and cityscape to the sea, each of the cones finds a place to its liking and stays to put down roots. Many picture books with scientific topics take a strictly factual approach, but Sidjanski’s includes sentiments such as “the pinecones are so afraid,” an emotion understandable to listeners when the river suddenly cascades into a deep gorge. This light fictionalization won’t keep children from absorbing the broader ideas of how the stream changes as it makes its way to the sea and how seeds travel by water. Full of light, Watts’ large-scale, line-and-wash illustrations seem to glow with gentle colors and teem with details designed to catch the eye. A pleasant addition to science units.
