The warm color-wash illustrations follow a child and his mother as they look at the moon from twilight to starlight. This simple book has much to offer. Along with a glimpse at the moon as it rises, the story gives a sense of the creatures (the moths, geese, fireflies, bats, and owls) that fly and flutter from dusk to deep night, night sounds (crickets chirping), and how shapes appear in moonlight. At the same time, it contrasts what the boy sees at night with what he sees in a homey daytime setting.
