Our democracy simply isn't working, according to Sue Cameron. The broadcaster's first book, subtitled 'The Disempowerment of the British People', argues that we have been increasingly disempowered by the very institutions and professions that have traditionally 'served' us - from local government to Whitehall; from legal and medical services to the prison and justice system. Cameron substantiates the claim with case studies of individuals whose lives have been ruined by a combination of systemic flaws and maladministration: from a woman imprisoned for failure to pay a small debt, to a policeman hounded by the CSA. Most of these cases are genuinely shocking, and Cameron is able to make them resonate with her larger theme. It's a timely and ambitious book, though one which does risk seeming to protest too much.
