In Swimming in the Sand , Hippo is hot and decides to go to the beach. While there she must decide how to cool off, whether or not to build a sand castle, and what to do at the end of the day. Pig is the heroine in Birthday in a Bathtub , and she spends her birthday making decisions: what to wear, what gifts to give her guests and where to eat the cake. Each time a protagonist is faced with a decision, one of the choices is correct and the others range from quirky to just plain wrong. Himmelman combines humor and logic while imparting the need to make well-thought-out decisions. Bright, cheery mixed-media pictures by Leonard add amusement and further the rhythm of the stories. A fresh, original series of concept books. Ages 3-6.

PreSchool-K--Frog has just made some toast. Does he use it to wipe the table, tell it a story, put it in water, or spread it with jam and eat it? The format in all four books is the same. At various points in a story about daily events, readers decide what will happen next, choosing from one practical and three nonsensical solutions. Although preschoolers will find ideas such as eating rainboots and drinking mud for breakfast funny, the books in general are undistinguished. The stories, told in pedestrian prose, lack a sense of excitment or drama. The cartoon animal characters, done in flat wash colors, are lackluster. Shopping for Snowflakes is the best title in the series. The illustrations of Hare show some personality as he enthusiastically chooses food in the grocery store, and the story has a punch missing in the others. These are the kind of books that in paperback might be useful as fillers in a large browsing collection. However, John Burningham's Would You Rather . . . (Crowell, 1978) gives readers a more creative experience with sense and nonsense.
