Author of Let History Judge and On Socialist Democracy , Medvedev is the closest thing the Soviet Union has to a loyal opposition. As an independent Soviet scholar with access only to public sources, he achieves a remarkably well-informed view of the interests and fears of all three members of the Sino-Soviet-U.S. triangle. The bulk of the book, a chronological account of China's post-1949 relations with each superpower, is accurate but not exciting except where salted with Medvedev's special perceptions, especially of subtle shifts on the Soviet side. The last 50 pages provide a balanced and wise analysis of current trends, concluding that it is in everyone's interest for China to maintain good but independent relations with both superpowers.
