Book Description Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Kristin Zambucka (illustrator). 1st. Subtitled "The Dignity of Maori Age". In this book the artist set out to record the chin tattoos of North Island kuia (grandmothers) before this ancient tradition was lost with the passing of that generation. (However, in more recent years these tattoos have seen a revival among maori woman.) Kristin Zambucka's subjects were all of advanced age when the portraits were painted and by the time the book was published some had already passed on. The dignity of the kuia featured is equally evident in the manner in which the artist depicted them. Many were past the 100 year mark at that time. This work provides a valuabe record of the last of the era of the traditional tribal tattoo for women. Each of the 25 plates of kuia has brief personal details of the subject opposite the portrait., Dr S M Mead of Auckland University said in his foreward: "All that is fine in Maori culture is projected upon the tattooed kuia. She is looked at with love and with a tear in the beholder's eye. What she symbolises is already gone and she herself is soon to follow," That is true, but the artist's beautiful portraits remain as a permanent reminder. This a rare signed copy by the artist. First edition by Reed of 1971, pagination shows 60 pages, but the many blank pages separating each plate section are not included in the count, (all pages are of heavy art paper.) Apart from the 25 full page colour art plates of the kuia, three are repeated in smaller dimensions on the title page, Kristin Zambucka's signature is on the half-title and dated 1971. Oatmeal cloth hard covers with black spine titles are NF, as is the book internally. Colour art DJ is VG+ with two short tears top front and rear top edge, few chips, corners of front flap creased. The size and weight of the book (almost 1.4kgs) will require additiional postage for international delivery. By Artist. Seller Inventory # 004547
