Grade 7 Up-- "Designer" drugs are those made by combining synthetically produced chemicals as opposed to drugs which have a plant base such as cocaine or heroin. McCormick describes the properties, effects , and use patterns of four designer drugs and their derivatives: fentanyl, methamphetamine, ecstasy , and PCP. She then goes on todiscuss the manufacture and distribution of these drugs and the legal ramifications of their use along with a brief history of the laws relating to controlled substances. The text is well written and informative; while it describes the negative effect of these drugs including some sobering case histories, it does not dwell on this aspect at the expense of an objective presentation of the chemistry of the substances and their current role in society. The book also includes an extensive bibliography and a list of drug abuse hotlines. The one jarring note in an otherwise well done volume is the photographs. They are of poor quality and do nothing to enhance the text.
