From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-9 Comfortable with her status as the only girl in a male household, Carrie is resentful when her father brings his secretary home to meet the family. And when young, tall, blonde Lise appears, it's hate at first sight. At 17 Carrie has always been able to get what she wantsuntil now. So Carrie schemes to divert her father's attention by ``going wild''dating a macho guy with leather jacket and earring and dressing like a ``tramp.'' Likening Lise to the white chess queen trying to control the game, Carrie plays her own dangerous strategy of leading Tony on while continuing to be Matt's girlfriend. Her attempts bring disaster, causing her to lose both boyfriends and her girlfriend and hurting her father. She learns that trying to move people around like chess pieces in her own private game can be self-destructive. Carrie's perspectives and self-centered focus ring true of teens who are confident that they can control what is happening. Without preaching, Hooper raises issues of honesty and trust in relationships in this sensitive and believable account. Skillfully paced and plotted, Carrie's gambit will involve readers while underscoring the risks of playing people as pawns. Julie Cummins, Monroe County Library System, Rochester, N.Y.

From Publishers Weekly:
Carrie has always been the apple of her widowed father's eye. When he starts dating Lise, Carrie doesn't like it. She goes out with Tony, a leather-jacketed, maho type, just to upset her father and interfere with his romance. But all Carrie manages to upset are her own relationships with her boyfriend Matt and his sisterCarrie's best friend. Some readers may find it hard to sympathize with Carrie's self-induced problems, and the main plot is anti-climactic and clumsily handled. The meeting between Tony and Carrie's father takes place offstage and is related as an afterthought; Carrie and Lise are reconciled with little explanation. The romance between Carrie and Matt is charming, however, and interest in how things end up will keep readers involved.
