Grade 2-5 This picture-book adaptation of the Funny Cide Team's Funny Cide (Putnam, 2004) gives readers a great feeling for the little horse with a big heart and his unexpected victory at the Kentucky Derby. After explaining why the odds were against him (his too-narrow body shape, his less-than-rich owners, and his not-famous trainer), the narrative describes his running style, favorite pastimes (eating peppermints and doughnuts), and quirks (napping right before the big race). It also relates how the thoroughbred's team (owners and training staff) came together to bring him into the limelight. By the end of this inspirational book, children will be cheering the horse on. However, the story is less successful at presenting information about the racing industry for those who are new to the topic. For example, Funny runs a half mile in 46 4/5 seconds, but youngsters do not have any idea how much faster he is than other horses his age. Moser's warm, loving depictions of Funny match the tone of the text, and the luminous illustrations capture both the big and small details of this sport. This title will circulate best in nonfiction collections where readers browse for good horse books.
