Jane Eyre is a wildly emotional romance with a lonely heroine and a tormented Byronic hero, pathetic orphans, dark secrets, and a madwoman in the attic. When it was
published in 1847, it was a great popular success. The power of the writing, the masterly
handling of the narrative, and the boldly realistic style were much admired. But many found it difficult to believe that Currer Bell, the pseudonymous author, was Charlotte Brontė , a young woman from a bleak Yorkshire parsonage.

When it was published in 1847, it was a great popular success. The power of the writing, the masterly handling of the narrative, and the boldly realistic style were much admired. But many found it difficult to believe that Currer Bell, the pseudonymous author, was Charlotte Brontė , a young woman from a bleak Yorkshire parsonage. This Norton Critical Edition again reprints the 1848 third edition text, the last that Charlotte Brontė herself corrected. The "Backgrounds" section was revised to include Brontė's "Rowe Head Journal", a collection of reflections & juvenilia that recorded her unhappiness as a teacher & her returns to the world of her childhood writing. There is also new material about Brontė as a student & teacher. "Charlotte Brontė & Her Readers"--a selection of reviews--include favorable exchanges w/ William Makepiece Thackeray as well as Brontė's retorts to negative reviews by Elizabeth Rigby & "The Christian Remembrancer". While retaining two essays from the first edition (those by Virgina Woolf & Robert B. Heilman), the "Criticism" section was revised to include more recent scholarship on "Jane Eyre", w/ important feminist interpretations by Adrienne Rich, Sandra M. Gilbert, & Helene Moglen, & an essay by Terry Eagleton. The Bibliography was expanded & updated for this edition. * ABOUT THE EDITOR: RICHARD J. DUNN was Professor of English at the University of Washington, where he taught since 1967. His publications include "Approaches to Teaching Dickens's David Copperfield", "David Copperfield: An annotated Bibliography", & "The English Novel: Twentieth-Centruy Criticism, Defoe to Hardy". He has written numerous articles on the Brontės, Dickens, Tennyson, & Carlyle. * ABOUT NORTON CRITICAL EDITIONS: Each Norton Critical Edition includes an authoritative text, contextual & source materials, & a wide range of interpretations--from contemporary perspectives to the most current critical theory--as well as a bibliography, &, in most cases, a chronology of the author's life & work. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee & via Mandatory USPS PRIORITY INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to international destinations at our posted rates.
