Book Description Soft cover. Condition: Good. Pan Books (Australia) Pty Limited, Sydney, 1982. Facsimile Edition of original first published 1906 by William Brooks & Company. Softcover (13 x 20 cm), xxii, 126 pages. ISBN: 0330270389. Good condition. Bumped, rubbed/scuffed, soiled. Creased, most notably at corners. Pages tanning. "In 1895 George Collingridge published 'The Discovery of Australia', the first full-length historical study to investigate early European explorations of Australia's coastline. His work is based on a series of maps known as the Dieppe maps, produced in France between 1536-66 which show a large landmass named 'Jave-la-Grande' between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and are believed to have been drawn from Portuguese originals. In 1906 Collingridge produced a revised and abridge edition, 'The First Discovery of Australia and New Guinea'. However, due to an unhappy turn of events, the book was not a success. This facsimile edition, with a new Foreword and Introduction by two leading scholars in the field of early Australian history, is an attempt to rescue this important work, and to give George Collingridge the recognition he deserves - as a cartographer, as a linguist, and as a pointer in the particularly controversial aspect of Australia's History."
