This book takes a generalist's approach to sex: it tries to make everyday sense out of the findings of specialists. The central question in the writing of each chapter has been, What does the reader need to know in order to more intelligently fashion a satisfying sexual life style? So, for example, the chapter on anatomy and sexual response is not concerned with providing a detailed account of the anatomy and physiology of sex, but rather, it provides the basic information that a man or woman might need in order to feel comfortable with their own bodies and to be more sensitive to their sexual response and the response of their partners. Likewise, the chapter on contraceptives and birth control could have been a detailed study of birth control technology, but the author felt it was more important to present the practical issues of contraceptive use to the reader. The major findings of sex researchers have been covered in this text, but only in relation to issues of everyday life. Of all the things in life that important to us, sex can certainly be one of the most enjoyable to learn about. it can be a source of intense pleasure and a great form of recreation, as well as a means of expressing love for ourselves and others, and a way of discovering more about who we are in the world. Born in St. Louis in 1933, David A. Schulz attended Princeton (B.A. in geology) , Virginia Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Washington University of St. Louis (M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology). From 1960 to 1967 he served as an Episcopal priest in the Diocese of Missouri and taught in the School of Public Policy and Administration at the University of Delaware from 1970 to 1987.
