This book is a companion to an eight-part PBS series of the same name that begins this month. It offers brief essays by noted garden writers on topics such as types of gardens around the world (rose, formal, country, flower, Japanese, and tropical), spring bulbs, and public parks. The essays vary in tone and content from Ann Lovejoy's friendly piece on growing flowers, to an obscure history of the philosophical underpinnings of Japanese gardening by Teiji Itoh, and an exciting tour of tropical gardens by Katherine Whiteside. The essays and abundant color photographs highlight the famous gardens where the series was filmed, such as Hidcote Manor and Giverny. Other illustrations include garden plans. This is a handsome book, but much of the visual information will be just as effectively conveyed by videotapes of the series. Public libraries might consider buying videotapes later, with the book an optional purchase as funds allow.
