In nineteenth century England, Tresham Pitcher, in need of money, pretends to be Captain Vinegar, an expert on the Far East, and convinces a publisher to give him an advance on a travel book

From Publishers Weekly:
It's 1842, and England, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, seems uncomfortably confining to impecunious and romantic Tresham Pitcher. He would go to India to seek his fortune and adventure, but how to get there? He hasn't the money. School chum Roland Farr suggests that Tresham gull a book publisher into underwriting the expedition by posing as one of those "captains" who travel about the world with a sword and a battered carpetbag, having just come from leading a troop of Lesghians against the Cossacks, or Cossacks against the Lesghians. As "Captain Vinegar," Tresham fools the publisher and sets off, but the character of the captain invades his personality more and more, to the point that he loses track of reality. He has "adventures" to be sure, but they're mostly Quixote-like, in his own head. Glazebrook's latest novel (after Byzantine Honeymoon) is an entertaining spoof of the picaresque genre, though somewhat limited in its appeal.

From Library Journal:
This new novel by the author of Journey to Kars ( LJ 10/15/84) is set in mid-19th-century England and Asia Minor. After leaving public school for financial reasons, Tresham Pitcher decides to seek his fortune in the East. To that end, he invents a character to impersonate, an heroic traveler and old Eastern hand, Captain Vinegar. Vinegar's commission is to write an account of a land march to India for a British publisher; his real goal is to further Sir Daniel Farr's interests in Asia Minor and retrieve a valuable piece of sculpture. An old-fashioned picaresque on the grand scale and well done, though Pitcher is never totally convincing as Captain Vinegar. Laurence Hull, Cannon Memorial Lib., Concord, N.C.
