He adopted Indian ways, was given the name 'Grey Owl', fell in love with a beautiful Iroquois girl (who became heroine in his book 'Pilgrims of the Wild'). He died aged 50, and his friend and publisher Lovat Dickson began sorting the myth from the reality about Grey Owl - which he tells in this book.

Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Very Good to Very Good+. Photo Cover (illustrator). ----------paperback, Canadian printing. The true story of Grey Owl, a reknown Canadian Indian naturalist, who, after his death, was revealed to be Archie Belaney, an Englishman. The book has a production-applied narrow strip along the front cover bottom edge, covering something, probably some text deemed inappropriate. The seller will not remove the strip, keeping the integrity of the book as issued intact, leaving the removal to the buyer if he or she chooses, but would really appreciate being advised by the buyer what's there! Reading crease, back cover creases, edgewear, a VG to VG+ copy. A later note (3/24): A kind reader has advised that there is nothing under the strip of tape.

VG/GOOD+. DJ is not price-clipped, but has a triangular section about 2 inches deep missing from the top edge downwards. front board beneath the triangle are sunned to pale, as are outer lower board extremes.clear gilt titling to spine. good clean copy internally. no inscriptions. His mission was to defend the countryside from exploitation, the Indians against the humiliations so often accorded them, and animals from cruelty and slaughter. Still Grey Owl was no saint, and beyond the exotic myth was a strange story. His real name was Archie Belaney, and at the age of eighteen he had left England from the Canadian northland, the land of his dreams. In the romantic pursuit of a vanishing reality, he adopted Indian dress and ways, and became a man of the wilderness. Archie turned his back on his past, invented a new one, and was ggiven the name Grey Owl. Then Grey Owl fell in love with a young beuatiful Iroquois girl, Anahareo, who was to be the heroine of his most famous book, Pilgrims of the Wild. Out of love for Anahareo, Grey Owl gave up trapping and turned to protectiving animlas. His books and talks, immensely popular, appealed not only to man's better nature, but to his hopes and dreams. When Grey Owl died in 1938, the truth about his past came out and the controversy was on. He was not part Indian. But did it really matter? The essential things were sincere - the man, and his message. And the myth itself proved too powerful to die.Illustrated. 283 pp.

8vo. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. [xvi] + 283 pp. Bound in original cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has chips at head and tail of spine. Board edges sunned, but otherwise a very good copy. Gift inscription at head of title. Illustrated by 16 pages of black and white photographic plates and by two maps, one double page. The biography of Archibald Belaney of Hastings (1888-1938), who assumed the identity of a native American later calling himself Grey Owl. Emigrating to Canada, he was originally a fur trapper who became an ardent wilderness conservationist, especially of the beaver. He married, or had relationships with, several indigenous women and worked for the national parks service. In the inter-war years his writings as Grey Owl made him an international celebrity, but his health declined (he had received a war injury leading to his discharge as a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force) due to alcoholism. When his true identity was revealed after his death, his standing plummeted, but in more recent years his reputation as a conservationist has been re-established and his writings republished. Lovat Dickson (1902-87) was an Australian born writer, publisher and biographer, who became a friend of Grey Owl in the thirties. Dickson published his work, Pilgrims of the Wild and arranged promotional tours for him in England. His first biography of Grey Owl appeared in 1939.
