First edition. Near Fine. Pictorial Soft Cover Wraps. Flat signed by author on half title page. "Wind-of-Fire: The Story of an Untouchable" is a social commentary and critique of the institutions and social attitudes that support animal segregation and speciesism in everyday life, particularly in the realm of traditionalist religion. Clair interweaves her insights with her odyssey as a seminarian, accompanied by her dog, Wind-of-Fire, as she attends the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. As an animal rights theologian with a cutting edge theology, Clair is not ordained within any traditionalist denomination. Clair questions the humanocentric nature of liturgy in organized religion and the exclusion of non human animals from its rituals and rites. She notes that invisibility, as with women and other minorities, results in oppression and injustice. A moving autobiographical testimony to the rights of animals to live justly across species. Clair has been called a "religious foremother" of the animal rights movement. Covers show very mild wear. Interior is clean, crisp, tight & bright, other than author's signature unmarked. 137 pp. Approx. 5.5" x 8.5". Signed copies of this work are very scarce. Carefully shipped in secure parcel. Ask all questions; glad to respond.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: very near Fine. First edition. 8vo. [4], v-xliii, [3], 3-323, [1] pp. Brown cloth with gold lettering blocked in brown on the spine. Illustrated with a few in-text and full-page diagrams and charts. Inscribed to Joe Elder by the author, inscription dated 1979, after what Moffatt refers to as the "fine Wisconsin Conference". With a typed letter to Joe Elder, signed by Michael Moffatt. The letter is on Rutgers Stationery, and closes with Moffatt asking Elder to excuse "the somewhat butchered Tamil". Moffatt was an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Rutgers College, and Joe Elder was a Professor in the Department of Sociology and in the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia. He is now Professor Emeritus. A nice association copy of Moffatt's study of the culture of India's caste system, and of the religious and cultural practices of those at the bottom of the caste system. Moffatt argues that when isolated from the other ranks of people in the caste system, "the untouchables" mimick the caste system among themselves. His book is based on fourteen months of observation in a few villages in Tamil Nadu. Foxing to the textblock.
