"In 1845 he (Revere) was assigned to the California coast, where, in command of a landing party from the Portsmouth, he raised the flag at Sonoma on July 9, 1846, fought in Stockton's force at the San Gabriel River, and participated in subsequent naval activities on the Mexican west coast." (closed tear at fore-edge). Original slate blue blindstamped cloth, gilt (unevenly faded, head and foot of the spine chipped with minor loss, lower hinge split). Provenance: Near contemporary ownership inscription of Joseph Libbey, Jr. dated May 6, 1852. First edition of one of the "most important books on the Gold Rush [which] figures on most selected lists" (Streeter Sale 2492). Revere based his map (showing ranchos, missions, and other landmarks) on Beechey's survey map of 1827, which became the authoritative guide to the bay and remained so until well into the American period, (Harlow, The Maps of San Francisco Bay 36). The plates include images of Sutter's Fort New Helvetia; Monterey Capital of California. Corrected from Capitol; Quicksilver Mine near Santa Clara; Monte Diablo from the Sacramento river; A Ranchero Feat. Bear lassoed and tied to a tree by a vaquero with a well equipped horse; A Pui Day. Anglos in foreground watch a busy Native American feast day. "Revere was the grandson of American revolutionary Paul Revere. A person by the name of Joseph Libby received a land grant in San Francisco on January 1, 1850, and a Joseph Libbey is recorded as having arrived in California on December 1, 1849 (Sloane). Lieutenant Revere was a graduate of Annapolis and a grandson of Paul Revere. His Tour of Duty is one of the outstanding authorities on the period of the Conquest, and his descriptions of California and the gold regions are among the best. Revere became so enamored of the country that he acquired a rancho near Sonoma and returned to California to live the life of a ranchero. "Revere was the first to raise the American flag at Sonoma, and for a while served as commander of that garrison" (Van Nostrand).
