A near-fine copy bound in finely woven green cloth stamped brightly in gilt on the front boards and on the spine. With the crisp photographic paste-down of Grey on the front boards. Name and date in ink on the front endpaper. With some light foxing and offsetting to the front and rear paste-downs from the dust jacket flaps. Printed on heavy stock with deckle edges; numerous photographic illustrations throughout. In the scarce original dust jacket with the price of $3.00 at the top of the front inside flap. Ivory toned paper printed in green with a photo of Zane Grey playing with two black bears on the front panel. With uniform darkening to the spine and with small pieces missing along the top edges of the rear panel and to the left and right of the top of the spine. The inside front flap has ads for "When the Sportsman Wants to read: American Football, A-B-C of Gold, Camp Life, Tend-Dwellers, etc." The rear flap features books on the out-of-doors: In Berkshire Fields, Wood Folk Comedies, Sharp Eyes, and How Animals Talk." Quite uncommon in the original dust jacket, and a collectible copy to boot. Pearl Zane Grey (1872 1939) was an American author and dentist best known for his popular adventure novels and stories associated with the Western genre in literature and the arts; he idealized theAmerican frontier. Riders of the Purple Sage(1912) was his best-selling book. In addition to the commercial success of his printed works, they had second lives and continuing influence when adapted as films and television productions. His novels and short stories have been adapted into 112 films, two television episodes, and a television series, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater.
