Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. presumed First Edition, First printing. 240 pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Bibliography. Index. K. T. Rowland served fourteen years in the Royal Navy, from 1941-1955, has seen services on various ships of the fleet--destroyers, cruisers, aircraft carriers, tankers and tugs. He had a subsequent career as a writer and editor. The author unfolds the fascinating story of the triumphs and failures of the early pioneers in steam, men of imagination and vision, like the Marquis Claude de Jouffroy, Robert Fulton, and William Symington. Famous ships of the "heroic age" of steam - Jouffroy's Pyroscaphe, Fulton's Clermont, and Brunel's trio of "Greats," the Great Western, the Great Britain, and the Great Eastern - are described in vivid and precise detail. The supremacy of steam was firmly established by such decisive inventions as the compound engine, triple and quadruple expansion, surface condensers, water-tube boxers, and, above all, the turbine. The use of steam for main and auxiliary purposes in both naval and merchant vessels culminated in the final "eclipse" of sail by the end of the nineteenth century.
