8vo, original blind-stamped cloth, map, 400 pp. Light wear to binding, spine faded, early stamp of attorney's office on front pastedown, slight dampstaining, some soiling or staining especially to endpapers , a couple of uncut pages, normal aging; otherwise about very good. This is a detailed breakdown of the seventh census. It contains substantial facts and figures about slave and free black population numbers in the various states, along with other typical census data. DeBow supported the Confederacy during the Civil War, but he also appears to have been one of the pioneers of the publication of economic statistics in the census, and also recommended the just of professionals to collect the data. This is a copy of the Beverley Tucker edition of DeBow's work, which appears to be scarcer than the Nicholson version. The OCLC locates one copy. OCLC. census government history website.
