Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Bonnie M. Tisler (author photograph) and Bradley C (illustrator). The format is approximately 5.75 by 8.5 inches. [12], 209, [1] pages. Illustrated dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the title page. Inscription reads To Stan Stirman, With best wishes, Jeremiah Healy May 13, 1988. Boston private investigator John Francis Cuddy delves into the alleged murder of a rich suburban white girl by her black boyfriend and becomes involved in the world of therapy and hypnosis. Jeremiah Healy was an acclaimed mystery writer whose best-known creation, the conflicted private investigator John Francis Cuddy, was a Vietnam veteran who solved crimes and confronted sensitive political issues with compassion, wit and the occasional burst of violence. Mr. Healy, a Harvard Law School graduate, introduced Cuddy with his first novel, "Blunt Darts," in 1984. He went on to write a dozen more and two short-story collections about the jaded but earnest sleuth who typically plied the waterfront and back streets of Boston. Many of the books were finalists for the Shamus Award, given by the Private Eye Writers of America, and "The Staked Goat" (1986), won it. John Cuddy was a former military police officer and widower who killed when he needed to kill, but readers were as likely to remember his vivid observations of the people and places he knew as they were the violence. Mr. Healy explored topical issues and wrote about date rape, racism, AIDS and homelessness. Reviewing "Shallow Graves" in The New York Times in 1992, Marilyn Stasio called the Cuddy books a "superior series" and cited Mr. Healy's "mousetrap timing and tight plotting." Cuddy attempts to exonerate a boy who confessed to murder under hypnosis. William Daniels nearly didn't make it to college. A black student raised in one of Boston's roughest suburbs, he once barely skirted time in juvenile hall for gang activities. Pressure from his mother convinced William to straighten out, and he went on to study at a prestigious university. Years after his first brush with the law, William is in trouble again, and it will take more than a mother's love to keep him free. While hypnotized by his psychiatrist, William admits to shooting his girlfriend, producing the murder weapon and telling the doctor where to find the body. When he comes out of his state, William is in handcuffs and thinks he killed the girl. But private eye John Francis Cuddy doesn't trust the psychiatrist, and risks everything to save this bright young man whose mind has been turned against him.
