But though casualties were severe the design of massacre was thwarted. The first attempt at rescue was made by 2000 men under Admiral Seymour in five railway trains. It failed. Seymour's base at Tientsin was besieged. The Taku Forts at the mouth of the North River were stormed and Tientsin was saved. But it was not until August that an International Relief Force, embodying not at all harmoniously the armed forces of eight Powers, was ready to march. The Legations' ordeal had lasted for fifty~five days before a campaign which had become a weltpolitisch cross~country race ended in their relief. Peking was given over to looting. The Empress Dowager fled to the interior disguised as a peasant; her last act before leaving the Winter Palace was to have the Pearl Concubine cast down a well. All these strange events took place less than sixty years ago. Mr Fleming has reconstructed them with the wry, discriminating objectivity which made Invasion 1940 notable. Published sources~including, since 1955, the archives of the Manchu Dynasty~throw abundant light on the period; but Mr Fleming has had access to important new material, and in particular to two sources of great value: the personal papers of Sir Claude MacDonald, the British Minister at Peking who acted as commander~in~chief during the siege, and the diary kept by Dr G. E. Morrison, the celebrated Times correspondent, who played a leading part in the defence of the Legations. The book vividly, and for the first rime fully, describes an extraordinary, half~forgotten episode which was to mark a turning~point in the relations between China and the world at large.
