Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. The only remaining active politician who was present at the creation of the nation of Israel, Simon Peres helped build a country known for its military prowess: tough, dogged, and determined to hold its place in the world. But he also takes much of the responsibility for the dark secret side of Israel; its arms deals, covert intelligence, and closed-door negotiations. Both aspects of this extraordinary man make for a fascinating story, and here, in a remarkably candid and authoritative account by Israeli journalist Matti Golan, we witness the whole man--flawed, ambitious, but awesome in his energy and greatness. Using material gleaned from Peres' private papers as well as his own eyewitness experience covering Israeli politics for over two decades, Matti Golan has produced a vivid, controversial, and exceptionally revealing biography that is also a stirring history of Israel from pre-World War II until present times. Describing a life filled with bitter disappointments as well as triumphs, Matti Golan looks deeply at both Shimon Peres the man and Shimon Peres the leader and contrasts him with Menachem Begin, rival Yitzhak Shamir, and others. The result is an exciting window into the back room of Israel's politics, a riveting human drama, and a brillant political analysis of a country that for many of us remains as much a dream and a promise as a nation.

Hardcover. First edition. First printing [stated]. Sewn binding. Paper over boards. x, [2], 357, [7] p. Index. From his involvement at age 16 in the Haganah to the rancor-filled election of 1988, here is the biography of one of Israel's leading politicians. This is a story of domestic and international drama, filled with the hopes of a man who has contributed so much to his country's place in the world. From Wikipedia: "Shimon Peres (2 August 1923) is a Polish-born Israeli statesman. He is the ninth and current President of the State of Israel. Peres served twice as the Prime Minister of Israel and twice as Interim Prime Minister, and has been a member of 12 cabinets in a political career spanning over 66 years. Peres was elected to the Knesset in November 1959 and, except for a three-month-long hiatus in early 2006, served continuously until 2007, when he became President. He held several diplomatic and military positions during and directly after Israel's War of Independence. His first high-level government position was as Deputy Director-General of Defense in 1952, and Director-General from 1953 until 1959. During his career, he has represented five political parties in the Knesset: Mapai, Rafi, the Alignment, Labor and Kadima, and has led Alignment and Labor. Peres won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize together with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat for the peace talks that he participated in as Israeli Foreign Minister, producing the Oslo Accords. Peres was nominated in early 2007 by Kadima to run in that year's presidential election, and was elected by the Knesset to the presidency on 13 June 2007 and sworn into office on 15 July 2007 for a seven-year term. He is the first former Prime Minister to be elected President of Israel. In 2008, Peres was honorarily appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. At the age of 90, Peres is currently the world's oldest head of state." Very good in very good dust jacket. DJ has slight wear and soiling.
