Seller: Flamingo Books, Menifee, CA, U.S.A.
Condition: Very Good. 1962 first edition thus Pacific Books (Palo Alto, California), 5 5/8 x 8 1/4 inches tall brown and gold cloth hardcover, no dust jacket (as issued), map endpapers, printed in black and brown, illustrated throughout with drawings by the author's daughter (Muriel Lawrence), 90 pp. Slight to moderate rubbing to covers. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this uncommon first edition of an important work of juvenile history by renowned American writer, photographer, and multilingual educator Helen Marguerite (Emery) Roberts (1896-1983). ~XX~ [1.5P] Originally published by Stanford University Press in 1948 to usher in the centennial of California's Gold Rush - issued in 21 small booklets, one for each California mission - in 1962 Helen Roberts' Mission Tales were republished in seven volumes with three of the small books in each volume and Helen's daughter Muriel providing the more than 250 illustrations for the stories. Volume 7 includes the stories for Mission San Francisco de Asis, Mission San Rafael and Mission San Francisco Solano. Born in Toronto, Canada, author Helen Roberts in 1911 moved with her family to Porterville, California. She was married in 1916 and for the next 11 years lived in Porterville, Bakersfield, Sacramento, Oregon, and Fresno, during this time having four children and getting an education degree at Fresno State University, practicing teaching in the Fresno adult education program, helping Mexican women to read, write and speak English. For 23 years, Helen actively wrote and produced more than 60 children's plays for the Palo Alto Children's Theater. In the mid-1940s she became interested in the California Missions, producing the 21 Mission Tales. From 1958 to 1975, she battled illiteracy in Africa, teaching reading, writing, health and Christian religion to thousands of illiterate adults. In the course of her African work, she mentored and sponsored many promising young Africans, encouraging them to pursue higher education, including Barack H. Obama, the father of U.S. President Barack Obama. Roberts' autobiography, The Unfolding Trail, was completed shortly before her death in 1983.

Black and white illustrations, complete. Pages are very clean and intact. Covers are clean and intact overall. Chipping on the spine and the top-right corner of the front cover is missing. Referenced from Kurutz, no. 37: "Printer's Imprint: Press of Eastman & Co. . Binding: Tan pictorial wrappers, stapled. Cover title. Illustrations: Seven engravings. . Barra, acording to Cowan, worked at one time as a saloon keeper catering to the printing trade. These privately printed reminiscences are based on a log or 'sea diary.' Barra took the ship SAMSON from Philadelphia on October 5, 1849, and reached Rio de Janeiro on December 20. He changed ships to the Urania, on which he worked for his passage. He arrived at San Francisco on May 3 and made a partial list of abandoned ships in the harbor. Historian and collector John Goodman, in notes accompanying his copy, stated that Barra's Samson actually was the 371-ton ship HERCULES and that Captain Madian and not Brainard, guided the ship. The ship sailed from Philadelphia on October 23, 1849, and arrived at San Francisco on August 3, 1850. Goodman further stated that there was not a Samson of any kind arriving at San Francisco in 1849-50.".
