259pp. plus 17(i.e., 19),[9]pp. of advertisements and advertisements on front and rear endpapers. Frontis. Publisher's blindstamped and gilt pictorial red cloth, spine gilt. Cloth a bit soiled, corners bumped, foredge of rear board scuffed, spine ends chipped. Frontispiece and titlepage browned, otherwise minimal foxing. About very good. Jonathan H. Green was one of most successful gamblers in the country until 1842, when he resolved to reform himself, stop gambling, destroy his "gambling implements," and devote himself to ending gaming and gambling throughout the United States. From then, he became the most important figure in the early literature of American gambling, publishing many works, like this one, in which he explains his path out of vice to virtue, and the subsequent work he did to combat gambling and expose crime, cheating, and vice. Intentionally or not, his writing on cheating and tricks is quite detailed and proved popular among active gamblers as well. In fact, the titlepage of the present work explains that it contains "a complete and full exposition" of a number of games, including "thimbles," "diamond cut diamond," "the post office game," "grab loo," and others. Green also wrote several reports on gaming as an agent of the New York Association for the Suppression of Gambling. He led investigations and toured regularly as a speaker. Despite his contemporary popularity, his works are now relatively uncommon. JESSEL 667.

312pp. plus 10pp. publisher's advertisements and six plates. Original brown publisher's cloth, stamped in blind and gilt. Cloth lightly faded, tail of spine scuffed. Mild foxing to plates, else very clean. Very good plus. One of the classics in American gambling literature, written by Jonathan H. Green (1813-87), renowned professional gambler and later reformer. Green is the most important figure in the early literature of American gambling, a gambler who became a crusader against illegal gambling, and wrote many works devoted to exposing crime, cheating, and vice. "A reformed gambler's adventures among brother card-sharps, counterfeiters, etc., along the lower Mississippi, from Kentucky to Louisiana" - Howes. This is probably the third edition of Green's work originally published in 1844 as GAMBLING UNMASKED. Green's works are some of the most elusive and important devoted to early American gambling. [2],240pp., including dedication leaf. Original blind-stamped brown cloth, spine gilt. Cloth neatly repaired along joints, spine ends, and corners. Cloth a bit sunned, discolored at the upper edge of the rear board. Front and rear free endpapers lacking. Faint dampstain to upper margin of text, light foxing throughout. Bookplate of Ricky Jay on front pastedown. Overall very good. Famed magician, actor, author, and collector Ricky Jay's copy of the rare first edition of Jonathan Green's memoirs, detailing his life as a gambler and then his swift reformation after twelve years as one of the most skilled players in the United States. Green was one of the most famous gamblers in mid-19th-century America. He is rumored to have won $23,000 in one night at the Chestnut Street Arcade, and he successfully plied his trade in gambling halls and riverboats from the northeast to Texas and beyond (some of those adventures recounted in this text). After his reform, Green became an active crusader against illegal gambling, writing several important works exposing the tricks of the trade and encouraging rehabilitation from vice. The title of this particular work refers to his incarceration in the Tombs in New York following his arrest on accusations of obtaining "goods and money.under false pretences" by a shady business partner who had promised to sell his books. In the subsequent narrative of his vindication, he highlights his relative prominence in New York politics (including excerpts from many laudatory letters and articles), his anti-gambling activities, and the support he received from judges and other notables, including Horace Greeley. He also describes the various tricks used by gamblers to fleece their victims. This volume also includes an unpaginated dedication leaf ("to my many warm friends of New Haven") bound before the titlepage. This copy comes from the collection of Ricky Jay, known as one of the great sleight of hand artists of all time in addition to being an actor, consultant, collector, accomplished author, and scholar of all things relating to magic, gambling, and unusual entertainment. Green's works are some of the most elusive and important devoted to early American gambling, here with highly significant and relevant provenance. Not in Jessel. SABIN 28535.
