George Oppen, the inscribee, was a poet who was influential in getting Ezra Pound and William Carlos Williams published. He was also a member of the Communist Party, USA, was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge, fled the US to Mexico in the 1950s to avoid being called before HUAC and upon his return to California won the Pulitzer Prize in 1969. He died in 1984.

On the back of that page Haberman has also written out a poem reflecting on the death of his mentor and close friend Edward Dahlberg, who passed away the same year this book came out, and to whom the book is dedicated. It reads, "Edward died! - will no one grieve? / chided friends - will you believe? / He'd stroke the heart - don't turn away! / chided friends - will you allow? / Little lamb - who made you growl? / - I guess I loved him. D." A very good copy in a very good + jacket. Publisher's printed glassine is lightly rubbed. Boards have minor wear to extremities, last blank leaf faintly foxed with a touch of insect damage.
