Lady Anne Isabella Noel Blunt ( 1837-1917) , the only child of Lord Byron, the poet. She shared her husband Wilfred Scawen Blunt the hatred of injustice, and his political beliefs, and she felt with him the attraction of the desert. Her knowledge of Arabic was profound. In 1878 she made an expedition through Syria and the Euphrates, the result was her book The Bedouin Tribes of the Euphrates ( 2 Vols. , 1879). This work covers her journey with her husband to to Najd. She was the first European woman to penetrate the heart of the Arabian Peninsula. #3947.

First Edition
First edition of the classic account of Lady Blunt's trip with her husband Wilfrid Scawen Blunt in Northern Arabia and the Nejd, "the highlands sacred to all Syrian Bedouins as their ancestral homeland" (Howgego). Although Lady Blunt's "scientific interests are manifest in the mass of aneroid readings, barometric pressures, and compass bearings" noted in her copious journals, they were "written simply as a private daily record, [and] provide frank insights into every aspect of her life. they also reveal a woman of remarkable courage and endurance. She was one of very few women of her time to travel into the heart of the desert. Her artistic talent is evident in her sketches: whether of desert scenes, Arabs and their animals, town dwellings, or ruined forts, they were executed meticulously" (ODNB). She was also one of the first to record the petroglyphs at Jebel Shammar. These journals were introduced and "essentially rewritten" (Howgego) by Wilfrid, this process seen by Ali Behdad as typical of the practices of the time which required "a woman's representation of the exotic Other to be authorised by the male orientalist", with roles demarcated "between the woman as fieldworker and the man as analytical theorist" (pp. 95-7). Ghani p.43 (later edition); Howgego III, B49; Macro 555; Robinson, Wayward Women, pp. 6-7; Theakstone, Encyclopaedia of Nineteenth Century Women Travellers, p. 45; Wilson p. 25. Ali Behdad, Belated Travellers: Orientalism in the Era of Colonial Dissolution, 1994. Two volumes, octavo (201 x 130 mm). Mid-20th-century dark greenish blue linen, strong brown morocco labels to the spines, light greenish yellow surface-paper endpapers, top edges gilt, small bookseller's tickets of R. D. Steedman of Newcastle to front pastedowns. Wood-engraved frontispiece to each and 12 similar plates by J. W. Whymper after Anne Blunt, numerous wood-engraved vignette tailpieces, coloured folding map at rear of vol. I. Spines a touch tanned, mild crumpling head and tail, text-blocks toned and with some foxing, folding map browned, particularly verso, and with a few short splits to folds and on the stub, but overall a very good copy in a clean, functional, and not entirely unprepossessing binding.

Both volumes, grey endpapers, bookseller label to fpds, small light water? stain to margin tp Vol 1, small bookseller label to epds (removed in v2), evidence of bookplate removal from eps. An excellent copy. (203*134 mm). The ?pilgrimage? describes a five-month journey undertaken by Blunt, in 1878, to the great central desert region of Arabia. That a woman should venture on such a perilous journey at all was unusual enough in the mid-nineteenth century, and the resulting narrative throws a refreshing and sensitive light on the people and places of those times. Her narrative contains all the romance of the desert and excels in the portraiture of its inhabitants. Yet also described are the awful hardships she faced in one of the world?s harshest environments.
