Covers show some light wear to edges and spine. Interior text pages are flawless. The cover and frontispiece are reproductions of paintings by Peter Hurd. This eight chapter story of a cowboy named Ross McEwen is reprinted from the copyrighted 1949 The Best Novels and Stories of Eugene Manlove Rhodes. This is a Western with a difference: not a fist fight or a killing. Not a shot fired in anger. It has been called one of the best Western stories ever written, and its popularity has endured since its first appearance in the Saturday Evening Post in 1926. In it Rhodes has created his own memorial to the decent people of his world who passed this way without fanfare. In so doing he has captured for all time the free, lonely, self-reliant, skilled, eternally optimistic essence of his West. It is a story of a cowboy named Ross McEwen who robs a store at Belen, New Mexico, with an unloaded shotgun, and takes to the hills. He successfully eludes pursuit, but pauses in his flight to aid a Mexican family stricken with diphtheria in a lonely ranch house on the edge of the White Sands. The bonfire he builds to attract help also attracts Sheriff Pat Garrett and his deputy. This story was filmed in Gallup, New Mexico under the title Four Faces West starring Joel McCrae, his wife Frances Dee, and Charlie Bickford. There is a six-page Bibliography listing Rhodes' books, collections, short stories, letters, articles and rare times. The Alamogordo Public Library has an extensive collection of Rhodes' literature and private papers.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Special Edition. N.p., n.d. [Sacramento: Edward H. Crussell, c. 1933] Three issues of the Saturday Evening Post, bound in small folio, ½ burgundy leather and pebbled cloth, gilt titles and borders. These three stories were first published on April 21,1917; Feb 20,1926; and October 1,1932. Sacramento bookseller Edward H. Crussell was a great fan of Rhodes and had the three issues bound by local bookbinders Silvius and Schoenbackler. He mailed the book to Rhodes for a signature. Rhodes responded with a full-page inscription: ##### Dear Mr. Crussell: Your binding of this book is best possible evidence that you really like these yarns. I thank you. / Am correcting Paso Por Aqui - in the volume Once in the Saddle . Not correcting Over Under Around and Through. The only copy I have is the English edition, wherein mistakes of American edition were eleminated. [sic] And I haven t strength to read it over, closely, watching for errors. This yarn was published in book form, under the title Copper Streak Trail - to my sorrow. If they had made it Copper Hill Trail I would have been better pleased. / Personally, I liked Robteelee Carr, I was well aquainted [sic] with that Lad. / In the Proud Sheriff I have made one correction - in chapter VIII. My mistake entirely. There was no empty shell. All was [sic], the cylinder had been turned so that the first attempt to shoot would bring the hammer down on an empty cylinder. Billy the Kid did that to Joe Grant, and as Joe snapped Billy laughed and killed him. / My favorite wife is copying off news paper item about Johnny Dines. By rights, it should go in Stepsons of Light. I am putting the sheets, loose, in this book, for you to dispose of as you will. [not present] Johnny Dines lives and thrives at Hillsborough, Cole Railston? at/or more accurately near) Magdalena and Jeff Bransford(?) is an old man in El Paso. Jack Farr an old man at Oscuro[?] And Johnny Pardee - (who is Bob Martin) drove down to see me yesterday. / Yours truly E.M.R. ##### The April 21 issue includes the illustrated cover featuring the story; the other two issues only the interior pages only. Except for a small rubbed area on the April 21 issue cover, all pages are fine as is the binding. Each issue separated by several blank sheets. Glued to the front pastedown is Crussells s bookplate and Rhodes 1934 newspaper obituary. In a cardboard portfolio with title label typed by Crussell.
