Book
Hard Back - Slipcased. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Second - Third Printings. 369 Pages Mute Stones - 470 Pages Greek Stones Indexed. Top page edges are red. Both book spines are brown and could be sun-faded, while the boards themselves are a dark black. Otherwise the books are very good with tight white pages. The slipcase shows some wear around the edges but is complete. Mute Stones is a 1960 copyright third printing while Greek Stones is a 1962 copyright second printing. For both books the author's aims were twofold: to write cultural history based on a selection of archaeological evidence, and to illustrate archaeological inference at work. The author's choice of sites was based on those aims. There are more sites in the Greek than in the Roman book because of the wider area covered from Sicily to Syria. Contents of Greek Stones: The Aegean in Prehistory, Greece in the Later Bronze Age l900-1125 B.C., Mycenaean Athens the Dorian Invasion 1250-700 B.C., The Lyric Age 700-480 B>C., The Classical Age Greece and the West 480-400 B.C., The Fourth Century 277, The Hellenistic Age 323-146 B.C., Greek World Under Roman Sway 146 B.C.- 267 A.D. Contents of Mute Stones : Prehistoric Italy, The Etruscans, Early Rome, Roman Colonies in Italy, Nabobs as Builders, Augustus Buildings as Propaganda, Hypocrite Madman Fool and Knave, The Victims of Vesuvius, Flavian Rome, Trajan Port Forum Market Column, An Emperor-Architect Hadrian, Roman Engineering, and Caesar and Christ.
