Condition: Sehr gut. 156 S. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - The history of mechanical toys is a long one, stretching as far back as the ancient Egyptians, but it was not until much later that the full weight of man's ingenuity was brought to bear. At first restricted to the wealthy nobility, the devices created were the early, intricate experiments of a new breed of technologists, and were constructed of the finest materials as befitted the tastes of their aristocratic patrons. It was not until some 200 years later that the new techniques and processes of the dawning industrial age introduced mechanical toys into the lives of the masses, at first at the popular outdoor fairs and exhibitions where manufacturers displayed their wares and where showmen demonstrated life-sized clockwork automata. Soon these large and stationary constructions, with their weights and pulleys, were transformed by the development of smaller clockwork mechanisms, friction drive, and sophisticated production techniques, and the manufacture and marketing of these exciting new playthings suddenly became big business in the United States as well as in Europe. The toys themselves began to be less the recreations of fantasy and to reflect objects in everyday life, particularly those objects which were themselves innovations. The introduction of steam and then electricity as power sources injected yet another spate of development, and toys reached new levels of sophistication. Mechanical Toys examines the progression from the early solitary and mysterious curiosities to the playthings of our recent past, identical in their thousands. Richly illustrated throughout, this history examines the results of man's attempts to use the disciplines of science to reflect the world around him.
