'Kein Grund zum Lachen' (No Laughing Matter) is an autobiographical novel set between 1912 and 1967. The story chronicles the ending of the traditional English upper middle-class life of a family as seen through the lives of the six children. Sir Angus Frank Johnstone Wilson aka Angus (1913-1991) was a British novelist and short story writer noted for his portrayals of middle-class English manners and characters. Wilson was born in Sussex, England to an English father and South African mother and was educated at Oxford. In 1937 he became a librarian in the British Museum's Department of Printed Books. During World War II he worked as of the British Bletchley Park code-breaking organization. His first published work was a collection of short stories, 'The Wrong Set' (1949). In 1955 he resigned from the British Museum wo write full-time. In addition to his writing, he frequently gave public lectures. In 1958 he received James Tait Black Memorial Prize for 'The Middle Age of Mrs Eliot' and later received a knighthood for his 'services to literature'. He co-founded the Master of Asts programme in creative writing at the University of East Anglia with Malcolm Bradbury. Wilson was appointed as professor in this programme in 1967. He chaired of many British literary panels, including the Booker prize. Angus Wilson was one of England's first openly gay writers and campaigned in Britian for homosexual equality. Zufriedenheit garantiert (satisfaction guaranteed). Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

He was awarded the 1958 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for The Middle Age of Mrs Eliot and later received a knighthood for his services to literature. This was his sixth novel and a rich one, about a dysfunctional family filled with characters fascinatingly flawed. The plots are "page turning", 'can't put it down for each character. The prose is excellent, not verbose, and every word 'tells'. First Edition Thus [1969]; unstated, in accordance with Penguin's customary practice. No subsequent printings listed.
