Unbound. Condition: Good. Two black and white photos of a fire, possibly in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Circa late 1800s, early 1900s. Photos measure 6 ¾ by 4 ½ inches mounted on cream colored decorative matte boards measuring 9 by 7 inches. One photo bears a handwritten caption on the reverse indicating an '[illegible] street fire Portsmouth Ci.' This shows several large wood buildings, perhaps apartment houses in smoke, with a large pile of wooden chairs and other items in the fore ground, as well as people grouped around the buildings. With a horse drawn fire carriage at the front right of the photo. The second photo perhaps shows the aftermath, with three brick chimneys standing among smoldering rubble. This is shot from a height somewhat above the scene, with houses seen in the background. Several people can be seen among the rubble. The photos are in GOOD condition, although the mattes are in POOR condition. Minor soiling, foxing, toning and rubbing to the photos. Heavy foxing, spotting and staining to the mattes, with an area of dampstaining along the lower left edges of both. A piece is torn off from the lower right corner of the matte corresponding with the rubble photo.

Album. Condition: Very good. Approx. 12" x 9" photograph album late 1800's. Green multicolor velvet, enamel, and metal bound photograph album. Album contains 61 photographs of various sizes, a memorial card, and a newspaper. Restored. Originally this album, constructed of Oak boards, had broken hinges, loose detached and torn photograph pages, torn cloth, and a later metal stand on the rear board. The metal stand was removed and replaced with an inlaid vintage multicolor floral silk design. An opening was created in the middle of the silk pattern for inserting a picture, label, etc. Each page was removed while repairs were made to paper tears. Photographs were then reinserted and each page bound together. This album includes the original brass locking clasp in very good condition. During repairs, every photograph was removed and inspected for names, locations and clues to its original owner. Few names were found written on the back of the photographs. Condition: Very Good. India, late-1800s to early-1900s, Writing Album. Manuscript poems, prayers, and meditations. Full brown morocco over flexible boards (8.25" x 10.25") with "Writing Album" stamped in gilt on upper board, all edges gilt; approx. pp. 150, with decorative endpapers and alternating paper colors (some white, blue, grey), nearly all of which contain handwritten entries, from numerous contributors. In English. Boards lightly scuffed along the edges; gilt a bit faded; a few leaves show some very light worming, or are detached and neatly laid in. Decades in the making, this collection of poems, prayers, and meditations addresses moral courage, bridal wishes, life lessons, faith, love, and more. Entries date from 1887 to 1924, some with locations (Delhi, Calcutta), and are contributed by many different people, in their own hand. All of the penmanship is legible, even lovely, with attempts at illuminated lettering and calligraphic flourishes. Also features two tiny b/w photographic portraits, a laid-in leaf, lovely hand-colored decorations (usually floral motifs), and a winding maze of words entitled "A Game of Life." Clearly a lot of care and thought went into every entry. A beautiful volume.
