Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 55 pages. Inscription on ffepThe fact that Rudyard Kipling vi sited New Zealand in 1891 is not widely known. That he wrote a sh ort story One Lady at Wairakei while he was here, which was publi shed at the time in the New Zealand Herald, will come as quite a surprise even to the literary world. The story is not contained i n any of the standard collections of Kipling's works. It is now being published for the first time in book form, with an introdu ction by Harry Ricketts, who has been responsible for rediscoveri ng it. Readers will find that it provides a fascinating glimpse of the overregulated, unstable economy then in existence in New Zealand, and an astonishingly accurate prediction of the developm ent of New Zealand literature during the twentieth century. Edit orial Reviews About the Author Harry Ricketts is currently a lec turer in the English Department at Victoria University of Welling ton. He admits to a lifelong love-hate relationship with Kipling, on whose short stories he wrote a B. Litt thesis while at Oxford . More recently, he has published an article on Kipling's autobio graphy, Something of Myself. He came across One Lady at Wairakei while investigating the conflicting accounts of Kipling's visit t o New Zealand. The story struck him as so interesting that he fel t it must be rescued from its position of unwarranted neglect.
