It may be that the author had no role in choosing the subhead of this as-new trade paperback. However, while Miss Alexander does mention the excavations of Troy IV, and credits the work of Milman Parry, Albert Lord, and others who studied the remnants of the ancient tradition of semi-literate oral bards in the Balkans in the early 20th Century (an expedition parodied in Ismail Kadare's novel "Dosja H." -- "The File on H."), the fact is that this book is NOT an attempt to find alternative parallel archaeological evidence to either debunk or construct anew "the true story" of the siege of Troy, but instead an attempt to pull apart what may have become a droning piece of somnolent verse, reconstructing Homer's tale largely in annotated prose. In other words, Miss Alexander's primary source is . . . Homer. Still, a far better and more insightful analysis of the tale and its main theme (war is bad?) than any mere "Cliff's Notes." 296 pp. including notes and index.
