Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Dust jacket price clipped, sunned spine, now in clear protective sleeve. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. 14 figures in the text, 2 folding plans, 16 plates. 105 pages of text. Clean and tight. This is an analysis, based on the excavations at Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, of a highly evolved urban discipline and economy, spread over a larger area than any of the known pre-classical civilizations, from about 2500 to 1500 B.C. After introductory sections, Sir Mortimer gives an account of the principal known sites. He then considers burials and skeletal types, military matters, commerce and transport, farming and fauna, arts and crafts, the Indus script, and the Indus religions. After a section on chronology he sums up the present state of knowledge. The twenty-six pages of plates contain illustrations of sites and objects brought to light during excavations. They are an impressive testimony of the civilization and art of the Indus Age. The new edition brings the material up to date as far as it is possible to do so. Since 1953, much exploration and some excavation in India and Pakistan have thrown new light on the Indus Civilization and its sequel. The results of this recent work are still largely unpublished, but their general trend has been indicated by brief additions and amendments. Size: 8vo.

Book
Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 3rd Edition. Hardback. The Indus Civilization. Slight foxing to edge. Slight browning to edge of back D/J. In 1921 at Harappa, a small town in the Punjab, and in 1922 at Mohenjo-daro in Sind, evidence was discovered of an evolved urban culture nearly two thousand years older than any previously recognized in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent. From the distribution of the sites first explored, the culture was named the Indus Valley civilization. This name it retains, although subsequent research has revealed elements of the civilization on the one hand westwards to the Makran coast and Saurashtra, and on the other hand eastwards into the valley of the Yamuna (Jumna). Thus amplified, the civilization is appreciably larger than its contemporaries in Iraq and Egypt. In this third edition Sir Mortimer Wheeler summarizes the new contributions to the study of the Indus civilization. Several sections have been rewritten, including new discussions on climate and dating. The book has been entirely reset, the figures redrawn, and new photographs of pottery, sculpture and sites have been added. Illustrated. Plastic protective covering.
