Hardcover. Condition: Good. George Catlin (illustrator). Heavy green cloth hardcover, a professionally rebound copy of the original printing with reinforced hinges and stitched text block bind. A good copy of this massive volume that collects the general report through the first 264 pp, and then moves into the magical assessment of the George Catlin Indian Gallery including 939 pp of plates, 3 small fold out maps and 2 wall map foldouts on reinforced paper. Noted flaws: Bending at the top portion of the spine column - binding cloth is the only part impacted - text and stitchery are intact and solid. Notation in pencil at the top of the front free-endpaper, "AM/BS/SS Donaldson" along with a price erasure. Damp staining along the front edge of the first sections - no mold or mustiness. Minor cover soil and some thumbing at the edges of the text block. An amazing look at the Catlin collection along with extracts of the writings of George Catlin. At 6lbs (2.72kg) and a full 4.5in (11.43cm) thick, comprised of more than 1200 pages, this volume will be shipped securely in a box and is available only for domestic shipping.

Seller: Alexanderplatz Books, New York, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Third and last New York edition, with a different pagination (40 pp.) from the first two (1837, 36 pp., 1838, again 36 pp.) This edition is the scarcest of the three, with only one holding (New York Public Library) in NUC. OCLC shows some additional locations. In 1839 Catlin moved his museum to Europe. The last eight pages in this copy are slightly smaller than the first thirty-two pages, either a different stock was used for this signature or they were trimmed for some reason. P. 17 is a part cancel, with corrected text pasted over a part of the page. We researched this matter when we acquired the book and believe that this is also the case with the previous editions. As it would make no sense for a printer to continue to set wrong text and then correct it by a paste-on slip in successive editions, this suggests to us that the various editions of Catlin's catalogue were made up from the same setting of type. We do not have the wherewhithal to verify this. We note that the last letter (p. 4) in a series of letters commending Catlin's portraits is dated 1838, and so must not have appeared in the 1837 edition. In an unattractive old binding of quarter-cloth and marbled boards with a hand-lettered label applied across the spine and onto the front cover. Catalogue itself is foxed, otherwise very good. There is one handwritten correction at item 467, possibly this was done to all copies.
