Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 128 pages with illustrated cartoons. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First edition. Walter Crawford Kelly Jr, or Walt Kelly, was an American animator and cartoonist, best known for the comic strip Pogo. He began his animation career in 1936 at Walt Disney Studios, contributing to Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Dumbo. Kelly resigned in 1941 at the age of 28 to work at Dell Comics, where he created Pogo, which eventually became his platform for political and philosophical commentary. The Pogo comic strip was syndicated to newspapers for 26 years. The individual strips were collected into at least 20 books edited by Kelly. He received the Reuben Award for the series in 1951. The principal characters were Pogo the Possum, Albert the Alligator, Churchy LaFemme, a turtle, Howland Owl, Beauregard (Houndog), Porkypine, and Miz Mamzelle Hepzibah, a French skunk. Kelly used the strip in part as a vehicle for his liberal and humanistic political and social views and satirized, among other things, Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-Communist demagogy (in the form of a shotgun-wielding bobcat named "Simple J. Malarkey") and the sectarian and dogmatic behavior of Communists in the form of two comically doctrinaire cowbirds. Condition: Light rubbing at spine extremities, small chip at spine head, spine sunned else very good.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Simon and Schuster; New York; 1970. Soft Cover. Book condition: Near Fine. Unstated edition, stated "First Printing" with no number line. Soft cover. 9-1/4"" tall, 128 numbered pages. This book has been read but is in excellent condition. The exterior is square, extremely clean, free of edge dings, with very little edge wear and only a very tiny bit of color loss to the heel of the spine; the spine is also slightly faded; binding is strong and not damaged in any fashion; there are no loose pages. Paper is very mildly toned and is vert flexible--there are no pages with pieces broken off. Except for an inked name/date/city on the FFEP, the interior is perfectly clean and completely free of stains and any sort of paper damage; I have leafed through the book several times and seen no writing, though I cannot guarantee that there are not comments (mostly one word comments such as "Yuk!" and "Yes") on several pages. Not remaindered or ex-library. Kelly's book both environmental as well as political pollution (by way of Vice President Spiro Agnew, represented as a uniformed hound).
