Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. Handle with some care this uber-scarce book, a reading copy only, but complete and with a sturdy, clean, little marked text-block. An apparent First Edition, though not so stated, this being one of a run of 6,000 copies. Plentiful, enchanting historical illustrations by Henry Doyle, being steel engravings in black-and-white, including heads, tails and initials.Easily Good condition interior, but the front board is nearly detached, hanging on by just a thread. The author's name at title page is rendered only as a logo (MFC) (for Mary F. Cusack), an a previous owner's embossed stamp (MW or WM) at title page and the following page. Very dark green cloth over boards, brown cloth to tips and spine, four raised bands to spine. Backstrip scuffed, creased, with chip missing at spine bottom, dings to edges, scuffing to tips, extremities. Gift inscription in pencil opposite title page, author's name spelled out at title page adjacent to logo, in pencil, possibly by a librarian. Marbled endpapers. Two maps at end, sewn in, moderately worn, creased, chipped along edges, one depicting the population of Ireland, the other, the different "religious persuasions" found there and then. Facsimile opposite p. 44 of a manuscript from the 6th century. The Irish writer Mary F. Cusack (1820 ? 1899) was A.D. was better known as the Nun of Kenmare, born near Dublin. According to the web-site devoted to her, "from 1861 to 1884 she conducted the celebrated convent of Poor Clares, established by her at Kenmare, and organized for the purpose of providing poor and friendless girls with a useful education." She established in 1884 the Sisters of Peace, "a similar order but with a wider range," sanctioned by both Leo XIII and most local Christians." She also published Students? History of Ireland, Woman?s Work in Modern Society, and the Lives of St. Patrick and St. Bridget. [2], 3-669 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
